It is with great sadness that Eden Research acknowledges the loss of Lanny Franklin, who died unexpectedly at his home in Atlanta Georgia, on 2nd August 2005. He was 58.
Lanny, a deep thinker and inventor, first showed interest in essential oils and terpenes from hearing about their potential on National Public Radio, and pursued this interest until his death. His energy and enthusiasm for terpenes resulted in the formation of Alpha Gamma Research Inc in 1993, which, through its work with experts including Professor Elsen and Professor Chang, developed numerous patents and patent applications based upon research into terpene chemistry. The resulting intellectual property was later acquired by Eden Research. This technology related to the use of terpenes as fungicides, bactericides and insecticides continues to be developed under the aegis of Eden Research.
Lanny was a founder member of Eden's Scientific Advisory Panel, fulfilling the role of visionary and entrepreneurial instigator. In recent years whilst not involved directly in Eden's development programme, Lanny became Eden's roving ambassador continuing to encourage interest in the use of terpenes across the world. He would attend and speak at conferences on behalf of Eden, and helped to develop Eden's extensive network of researchers through his zeal and enthusiasm for the subject. Lanny's work will be built upon by Eden's existing network of consultants in both the UK and US.
Lanny was also an accomplished pilot who served with the US Air Force in Vietnam between 1968 - 1969, and had a wide range of interests, including boxing and the role of Georgia's first Boxing Commissioner as well as pursuing a successful career as freelance journalist and author.
Lanny is survived by two daughters, two grandchildren and his fiancée, and his kindness and wit will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
