Eden Research now has approval for Mevalone (3AEY) in Albania for the treatment of botrytis on grapes and greenhouse aubergines, kiwis, pomegranates and fresh onions

Eden Research now has approval for Mevalone (3AEY) in Cyprus with the same disease and crops as Greece.

Environmentally friendly product to combat botrytis (grape rot) 
in one of the world’s largest wine producing nations

Eden Research plc (AIM: EDEN), the AIM-listed company that provides breakthrough natural bio-control products and microencapsulation technologies to the global agrochemicals, animal health and consumer products industries, announces that is has received authorisation in France for its first product, 3AEY, for use in the prevention and treatment of botrytis in table and wine grapes. 3AEY will be sold in France by Eden partner SumiAgro France under the brand name "Mevalone™".

This is a significant and long-awaited milestone for the Company and will allow SumiAgro France to sell Mevalone to its established customers. Mevalone is a terpene-based fungicide that can prevent and treat botrytis, a widespread fungal disease that causes grey mould on many fruits and vegetables leading to the rapid loss of commercially valuable crops. The average losses from affected crops account for around 20% of the total harvest, costing producers between €10-100 billion annually worldwide, depending upon weather conditions. The market for Botryticides alone is more than $350 million per annum.

Mevalone is also an extremely useful tool in managing the resistance of pests to many common conventional fungicides."

2016 has seen the first sales of 3AEY in Italy (where it is sold as 3logy®), Greece (Mevalone™), Kenya (Hawk™) and Spain (ARAW®). In total, sales of 3AEY at distributor level are in excess of €1m with over 85,000 litres sold in those territories. Sales were somewhat above what we and our partners had forecast. This is encouraging particularly as botrytis, which is the fungal disease that 3AEY targets, was not especially prevalent this season in most regions. In some areas, 3AEY achieved a market share of approximately 20%, which is a very good result for a new product to market.

In 2016, it was from partners’ sales of 3AEY from which Eden derived its revenue in the form of royalties. However, it is intended that from 2017 onwards Eden itself will supply its partners with product in most if not all of the above territories, as well as other countries where 3AEY is to be marketed in the future.

Sales of 3AEY are expected to start in France in 2017, subject to regulatory approval, which is still pending. In Portugal, the position is less clear as the regulatory authorities there are, in general, very slow in granting product approvals. The impact on overall sales to Eden is, however, not material at this stage. Based upon our understanding of the timescales involved, it is hoped that approval will be granted in Portugal during the course of 2017, though it is unclear as to whether this will happen early enough to allow for sales of 3AEY in the 2017 season. Approvals of 3AEY are also expected in several new territories. Further updates on these pending approvals will be provided in due course.

Overall, the Company is encouraged by the level of sales of 3AEY and its acceptance into the market. In 2017, we expect to see an increase in sales as market share increases in those countries where sales have already taken place and sales start in new territories.

Eden today announced that it has signed an agreement with Eastman Chemical (“Eastman”) which has granted them the exclusive right to develop the market for Eden’s nematicide formulation, which will be marketed by Eastman as ‘Cedroz™’. As part of the agreement, Eastman will pay Eden an upfront fee, as well as annual milestone payments until 2019 when it is expected that sales will commence. Eastman will also take on the responsibility for the registration of Cedroz™ in each territory covered by the agreement whilst Eden retains responsibility for the registration of the active ingredients and will supply Eastman with its product requirements. The agreement covers 29 countries including the largest markets for nematicide products globally.

Revenue for the year ended 31 December 2016 is currently expected to be in the region of £0.4m with an EBITDA loss for the year of approximately £1.1m. Eden’s cash position is expected to be approximately £1.4m at the end of 2016. The evolution of Eden’s business model in 2016 from technology licensing to product sales has resulted in lower upfront payments, which coupled with the delay in receiving regulatory approval in certain territories has impacted earnings in the 2016 financial year. However, the Board remains confident in the new business model and believes that it will lead to greater returns in the medium and longer term.

The Agreement grants Eastman the exclusive right to develop the market for Eden’s nematicide formulation, which will be marketed by Eastman as ‘Cedroz™’. Eastman will pay Eden an upfront fee, as well as annual milestone payments until 2019 when it is expected that sales will commence. Eastman will take on the responsibility for the registration of Cedroz™ in each territory whilst Eden retains responsibility for the registration of the active ingredients and will supply Eastman with its product requirements globally. The agreement covers 29 countries including the largest markets for nematicide products globally.

Nematodes are a major category of plant pest that cause an estimated $300 million of damage per year in Europe alone. Most major crops are affected by nematodes with particular damage being done in the high value fruit and vegetables segment. This segment of the nematicide market is in the region of $550m globally. Given the withdrawal and restriction in use of a number of key products that were well established in the market, Eden and Eastman are optimistic that Cedroz™ will become an effective tool for growers whose options are becoming limited when facing the issue of nematode control.

Aside from its efficacy, Cedroz™ benefits from the fact that its active ingredients are exempt from Maximum Residue Level (“MRL”) limits in the European Union. This translates into a clear benefit for growers when considering treatment programmes, as Cedroz™ can be used without regard to concern for residues, thus allowing growers to protect their crops right up to the point of harvest.

Since Eden’s last AGM, I am pleased to report that, following the initial EU approval by Malta of our agrochemical fungicide product, 3AEY, further approvals have been granted in Italy, Bulgaria, Kenya, Greece and Spain. Already, product sales have been made directly to our partners in Kenya and Greece, with sales to be made this year in Italy and Spain where our partner is manufacturing the product itself. French approval is expected during 2016.

Eden has a strong portfolio of products based on the three active substances for which we already have EU approval. We are now able, thanks to the funding received in March 2016, to progress registration of 3AEY and other products in areas such as Australia, USA and South America, where we can leverage the safety and in some cases trial data which we have already generated for the EU approval process.

In crop protection, we have a number of well-established partners to sell our products (Sumi Agro France, Sipcam Italia and Iberia and Efthymiadis) with trials on-going with partners for other areas of the world (USA, South America, Australia, Central Europe and North Africa).

Eden continues to develop and commercialise, with partners, a range of products using its patented GO-E encapsulation system with terpene technology in agrochemicals and other markets such as human (TerpeneTech for biocide and head-lice applications) and animal health (Bayer Animal Health for animal health products). Some of these opportunities are well advanced, such as Eden’s nematicide product, where formulation work, field trials and testing are complete and arrangements are being concluded with our prospective partner to commercialise this product. Other opportunities are earlier stage concepts where the potential is significant, but the risk of commercial success is higher.

Developing products takes time, as does nurturing relationships with any customer, especially the bigger players where just getting a foot in the door can take a lot of time and effort. Field trials have to be conducted, the regulatory requirements have to be checked and met. Distributors and users then have to be convinced that these new products really do work. Then, you can sell products, generate revenues and, ultimately, make profits.

Eden has a well-balanced portfolio of products, projects and opportunities at differing levels of risk of commercial success, the first of which is now bearing fruit, with a strong pipeline behind it. All part of the process of Eden becoming a truly commercial entity, having shifted from a purely development phase.

In the 2015 Annual Report, your CEO said that “the outlook for the Company is better than it has been at any point in the past”. I would like to reiterate his comment and assure you that I will do my best to make sure we capitalise on our position and make Eden the success it should be.

In May 2013, the three actives that comprise Eden’s first commercial product, 3AEY, were approved as new ingredients for use in plant protection products. This represents a major milestone in the commercialisation of Eden’s technology and is a significant accomplishment for any company. To illustrate this point, one should note that in all of 2013, Eden’s approvals represented 3 of only 10 new active ingredients approved by the EC.

3AEY has already been authorised for sale in Kenya, Malta, Greece, Bulgaria, Spain and Italy.

Eden Research plc (AIM: EDEN), the AIM-listed company that provides breakthrough natural microencapsulation technologies to the global agrochemicals, animal health and consumer products industries, announces that, together with its commercialisation partners in Spain (Sipcam Iberia) and Greece (Redestos Group), it has been granted label extensions for the use of 3AEY for a new disease target in Spain and number of additional minor uses in Greece, beyond the original designation for the prevention and treatment of botrytis in table and wine grapes.

In Spain, 3AEY (locally marketed as “ARAW” by Sipcam) has been additionally approved for use in the control of vine powdery mildew. Powdery mildew is one of the most challenging and widespread fungal diseases of grapevines in the world. Powdery mildew manifests itself as a powdery growth on the tissue of the vine and affects both table grapes and wine grapes causing significant crop losses and impacting the quality of wine. In Greece, the authorities have expanded the approval for the use of 3AEY (marketed as Mevalone in Greece and the Balkan states) in the treatment of botrytis on field and greenhouse aubergines, kiwis, pomegranates and fresh onions.  Combined, these crops cover more than 14,000 hectares in Greece.

These approvals are the first milestone in the expansion of regulatory clearance for 3AEY outside of the initial authorisation for the prevention and cure of botrytis on table and wine grapes. Together with Redestos Group, Eden is also pursuing authorisation for 3AEY in several countries outside of the EU Southern Zone, and these registrations will be granted in due course, subject to regulatory process and approval.
